A deputy from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office fatally shot a man last night after he allegedly held a knife to a woman's neck inside his Tampa apartment. The incident, which arose from a dispute between neighbors, prompted law enforcement to respond to a 911 call around 9 p.m., according to WFLA.

The man identified as 47-year-old Jason Paul had earlier called 911, alleging his neighbor had punched him, but upon arrival, deputies found him extremely aggressive and making threats against the neighbor's life. Despite attempts to calm the situation, Paul proceeded to barricade himself inside his residence moments after threatening violence and indicating he intended to arm himself, per WTSP.

When deputies attempted to take the man into custody under the Baker Act, they were met with resistance and further antagonistic behavior, including threats made directly to the officers. The situation escalated rapidly when Paul's mother provided deputies a key to the apartment, and they heard a woman's scream from within. Officers observed through the window Paul holding a knife, prompting them to force entry to rescue the hostage, explained FOX 13 News.

The situation reached a perilous climax as Paul, ignoring multiple orders to drop the knife, was seen pulling the woman into a back bedroom, whereupon Deputy John Howes shot him an effort to protect the victim’s life. Paul was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital, shared WTSP. The involved deputy, who joined HCSO in February 2024, had no prevous history of using deadly force. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation, as is the standard procedure following deputy-involved shootings.

The incident has stirred the local community, as evidenced by a prior 911 call in 2021 that hinted at a "similar situation" with the suspect. Sheriff Chad Chronister, in a statement underscored by WTSP, commended the actions of his deputies, stating, "Our deputies sprang to action when confronted with a situation where someone's life was in immediate danger. Our deputies are trained to protect innocent lives, and that's what they did."
