Tampa residents have a reason to give themselves a pat on the back as the city marks significant water conservation milestones this year. According to an article published by the City of Tampa, close to two billion gallons of water were saved following water restrictions implemented last December.
These measures, which limited watering to once a week, came in response to regional drought problems, a serious issue in Tampa since December 1, 2023. They were solidified as a year-round ordinance by the City Council on August 1, to curb the increasing stress on water resources, in the effort to manage water demand that the once-a-week watering restrictions were adopted, saving water significantly. Tampa has observed an average daily water use drop by about 5.5 million gallons, a decrease from usage rates seen the previous year.
With these restrictions in place, Tampa's Water Department, which faces a cap of 82 million gallons per day from the Hillsborough River, aims to keep consumption within these restrictive but necessary limits. As reported, exceeding the limit compels the department to buy water from Tampa Bay Water, resulting in added costs to taxpayers' bills. Such measures become increasingly pertinent as the population grows and Tampa approaches its dryer season.
Nevertheless, Tampa's water conservation team is actively working to support residents through a variety of programs. By providing irrigation evaluations, residents, after following through, have saved an average of "5,000 gallons of water per month," according to the City of Tampa's announcement. These figures equate to significant annual savings on utility bills. In addition, the department offers conservation kits, both outdoor and indoor, and also Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ resources among others.
