Travelers in Tennessee can expect smoother highways during the holiday season as the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) lifts all lane closures on interstates and state highways. This suspension of construction work will begin at 11:59 p.m. on Monday next week, and end at 11:59 p.m. on January 1, as per the Tennessee Department of Transportation release.

This decision follows a transportation forecast by AAA, which predicts that approximately 2.7 million Tennesseans will be traveling, mostly by car, during the holidays. TDOT Deputy Governor and Commissioner Butch Eley emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, "Safety is our top priority and with so many people expected to travel Tennessee roadways during the holidays, we want to keep traffic moving and get everyone to their destinations." He also reminded drivers in the same release, "As always, please wear your seatbelt, reduce your speed, avoid distractions, and move over for emergency vehicles."

Although most construction work will pause, some long-term closures will remain for public safety. Drivers are reminded that workers may still be present in construction zones, and posted speed limits must be followed. Violating these rules could result in fines between $250 and $500, along with court costs and possible increases in insurance premiums.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation advises drivers to "Know Before You Go!" by checking travel conditions before leaving.
