Los Angeles International Airport faced technical disruptions Thursday after "anomalies" were detected in its computer communications networks. According to Patch, Los Angeles World Airport authorities are currently investigating the cause of these anomalies, which led to the temporary shutdown of LAX's website. Despite the loss of online services, officials confirmed that there was no significant effect on flight operations.
Early reports indicated that there might have been a cyberattack, but at present, this has not been confirmed by authorities. In a statement obtained by KTLA, LAWA officials stated, "Los Angeles World Airports detected anomalies in our communication network earlier this morning," and that precautionary steps were taken to isolate the system while the situation was assessed. Not only LAX but also the website for Van Nuys Airport, also operated by LAWA, experienced downtime due to the incident.
Flight tracking data from FlightAware showed only three flight cancellations and a handful of delays, suggesting the anomalies did little to disturb the ebb and flow of air traffic. An LAX spokesperson detailed to FOX LA, "The airport is operating at full capacity and there are minimal impacts on airport operations." These reassurances notwithstanding, the lack of clarity surrounding the origin or nature of the anomalies leaves a question mark over the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure at one of the world's busiest travel hubs.
