The Tennessee Department of Health is stepping up its game this flu season, rolling out free flu vaccines at locations spanning all 95 counties. As per an announcement, these vaccines are part of an initiative to reduce the transmission of the virus, and they're available to any Tennessean older than six months, according to the Tennessee Department of Health.
As per the Tennessee Department of Health, TDH Commissioner Ralph Alvarado impressed upon the importance of this service, "During flu prevention season, the Tennessee Department of Health is making all Tennesseans aware of locations where they can receive a free flu shot to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors.’’ The push for widespread vaccinations follows a flu season where national estimates pegged the illness count between 34 million and 75 million, with deaths ranging from 17,000 to 100,000.
The defense against influenza isn't just about getting vaccinated, though. Health officials insist on tried-and-true methods: steer clear of those who are flu-stricken and, if sick, keep to yourself to prevent spreading the virus. Regular hand washing and covering coughs or sneezes with your elbow are key steps. In the unfortunate event that the flu does strike, doctors might suggest antiviral drugs, which, although not sold over the counter, can help ease symptoms and shorten the duration of the illness.
Symptoms of the flu can range from muscle aches and fever to coughs and runny noses. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Department of Health's endgame remains the same: "Protect, promote, and improve the health and well-being of all people in Tennessee."
