Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow and Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan have confirmed that three individuals are facing charges after a daylight shooting incident startled a Cambridge neighborhood last month, a sequence of events that has raised alarms over gun violence in the community. The incident occurred on November 22, around 2:10 p.m. when officers responded to reports of gunshots on the 300 block of Rindge Avenue, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
Initial witness reports described a red sedan speeding from the scene and three suspects—later identified as Daniel Cabrera, 20, Elias Reardon, 18, and one juvenile male—fleeing on foot, one of whom allegedly discharged two shots at the vehicle which subsequently crashed into a traffic light pole; surveillance showed the car traveling on the wrong side and mounting the sidewalk before the collision. As a result of the investigation, surveillance footage, and the physical evidence collected, which included two shell casings detectives linked the trio to the crime, as reported by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
The charges brought against the individuals include assault with a dangerous weapon among other firearm-related counts, highlighting the recklessness that put everyday city goers at risk; District Attorney Ryan deemed it "a case of brazen disregard for the safety of the community" and Commissioner Elow emphasized the pressing need to address "ongoing concern and priority" over youth-involved gun violence, as detailed in their statements. Reardon, who faced several charges including possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, was arraigned and held, with Cabrera's arraignment on additional counts, including assault and battery with a firearm following shortly thereafter, both kept in custody under a statute relating to their assessed danger to the public, as per the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
The juvenile, whose name remains undisclosed due to legal protections for youthful offenders, was also arraigned on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon; these proceedings are not open to the public, which maintains the privacy standard for minors in the legal system.
