Early Thursday morning, a fatal crash occurred on I-45 near Quitman Street. A wrong-way driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when they collided head-on with another car. The crash, which happened around 2:43 a.m., resulted in the deaths of two people, including a 32-year-old man heading home from work. All southbound lanes of the North Freeway were closed as a result, as reported by Click2Houston.
Houston police confirmed one driver was returning home from work, but the other driver’s identity is still unknown. Houston Police Department Sgt. Dionne Griffiths said, "Phones now have technology that when there's a crash, it notifies loved ones and favorites, so they were alerted at the time of the crash," according to ABC13.
The Houston Police Department is investigating a wrong-way driving incident, including how the driver got onto the freeway. Sgt. Griffiths said, "We see wrong-way drivers pretty much all year long. The only thing now is that it's closer to the holidays, so it's more tragic 'cause you know families really don't want to have tragedy around the holidays." The crash caused a closure of the southbound lanes, expected to last into the morning. Drivers are urged to take alternative routes, like the I-69 Eastex Freeway, while the investigation continues, as stated by ABC13.
