Alief ISD Cuts Ribbon on All-Girls School Built to Win Back Families

Alief ISD celebrated a ribbon-cutting Thursday for The Young Women's Leadership School of Alief ISD, a new all-girls college-preparatory campus the district says marks the beginning of a new chapter for local students and families. The school opened to students on August 12 at 2501 High Star Drive in southwest Houston, launching with sixth and seventh grade cohorts that will grow by one grade level each year until the campus serves grades 6 through 12.

In a post marking the occasion, Alief ISD thanked its board of trustees, district leadership, educators, students, and community partners, along with the Young Women's Preparatory Network, for helping bring the campus to life. That network donated $1 million to Alief ISD under a partnership agreement to launch the school, according to the Houston Chronicle, making it the nonprofit's 12th public all-girls partner campus in Texas. The district's own reporting says the school is designed to empower young women to lead with confidence, compassion, and purpose, and describes it as a new initiative rather than a rebrand of an existing program. Founding Principal Tamara V. Albury brings more than 20 years of Texas education experience to the role, having previously directed a nationally recognized public all-girls school where 100% of students graduated, according to the district.

A Model Built on Strong Statewide Numbers

The curriculum at the new campus is structured around three pillars — Responsible Leadership, College Preparedness, and Health & Wellness — with course focus areas spanning STEM, business, art, and civic engagement, per Alief ISD. Across the Young Women's Preparatory Network's partner schools statewide, all-girls public campuses maintain a 100% high school graduation rate and a 100% four-year college acceptance rate, with 70% of network alumni going on to earn a college degree.

A September 2025 analysis by the Texas Urban Council found that roughly two-thirds of students attending YWPN single-gender public schools meet grade level on state standardized assessments, compared to under half of students statewide. The network operates public all-girls partner campuses in major Texas school systems including Dallas, Austin, Houston, Aldine, Fort Worth, El Paso, Lubbock, Midland, San Antonio, and Ysleta, and it established the state's first public all-girls school in Dallas ISD back in 2004.

Enrollment Pressures Behind the New Campus

The timing of the launch is tied to a broader enrollment challenge facing the district. Alief ISD experienced a net drop of roughly 7,000 enrolled students over a seven-year span, according to ABC13 Houston, prompting district leaders to expand specialized choice programs to retain local families. The Young Women's Leadership School was developed directly in response to community input from parents seeking single-gender educational options and is now one of eight specialized choice programs offered across the district, alongside STEM academies, early college high schools, and dual-language programs.

That enrollment pressure has not eased. A new YES Prep campus also opened in Alief this month, adding another charter alternative competing for students in the same southwest Houston footprint. The surrounding Alief neighborhood has also seen its population decline by 7% between 2018 and 2023, with Kinder Institute data showing a local demographic makeup of roughly 42% Hispanic, 27% Black, 23% Asian, and 6% White residents, a dynamic Hoodline detailed in its earlier coverage of the area's housing and economic challenges.

Taken together, the new campus represents both a fresh educational option for Alief families and a strategic bid by the district to rebuild its student base through in-demand specialty programs. With grades expanding year by year and a network track record built on near-universal graduation and college acceptance rates, district leaders are betting that a proven model can help turn enrollment trends around in southwest Houston.
