Commuters in Arlington, brace yourselves for a series of road closures that might just put a damper on your travel plans come December 15. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced in a statement that the westbound I-20 ramp to southbound US 287 will be closed during daytime hours. This closure is part of the larger $2.1 billion Southeast Connector Project aimed at reconstructing and widening a significant portion of area roadways by 2027.
For those already navigating the labyrinth of daily commutes, expect the US 287 southbound to be reduced to one lane between Little Road and Sublett Road during daytime on Dec. 15. Also taking a hit is the I-820 southbound, with several entrance ramps facing closures and lane reductions overnight and during daytime. Having partnered with Waze, the City of Arlington assures drivers that they can circumvent some of the traffic headaches by using the app for real-time traffic updates and detour information.
The southeast part of Tarrant County is poised to see enhanced connectivity to the heart of the county, with the promise of alleviated congestion and upgraded safety and efficiency. Yet, until 2027, when the project is scheduled for completion, motorists must sideline convenience for the long-term benefits. Residents looking to stay ahead of the construction activity can sign up on the Southeast Connector Project website to receive direct updates via text or email, and are reminded that speed limits have been reduced to 55 mph within the entire corridor.
Every Friday, updates on detours, closures, and project photos can be found – reflective of changes subject to weather and schedule – by visiting the Southeast Connector Project site. The project timelines and immediate changes may intrude upon routine travel, but Arlington's relationship with Waze affords a modicum of control over navigating the city's thoroughfares amidst disruption.
