The doors are open for Travis County residents seeking a clean slate. The region's seventh annual Expunction Expo is now accepting applications to facilitate the process of scrubbing certain arrest records, as reported by CBS Austin. Intending to aid those with dismissed charges, acquittals, or pardons, the event provides a crucial service as these records, absent of any conviction, can still haunt individuals during routine background checks, potentially obstructing their access to jobs or housing.
"To level the playing field, that's what we need to be focused on," Quincy Dunlap, President and CEO of the Austin Area Urban League, told CBS Austin. His organization has joined the efforts this year to ensure that even those who have been wrongly trapped by the justice system have a fair chance at rebuilding their lives. According to Headtopics, Travis County District Clerk Velva Price points out a common misconception: "They think that once it gets dismissed, that it no longer applies to them, that the system automatically does it," indicating the gap in knowledge about the expunction process.
The significance of the event is multi-layered, addressing not only judicial missteps but also economic ones. A pardoned crime's shadow, without proper expunction, can still cast a long presence over someone's opportunities in life. Velva Price emphasizes the importance of this Expo by detailing the number of people it has already helped. "Since 2020, the Expo has expunged the records of nearly 1,100 people," she said, and this year's event, unfolding on February 22nd, aims to add 500 more to that list, as stated by CBS Austin.
Offering much-needed reprieve, this pro bono initiative garners support from dozens of volunteer attorneys who share in the celebration of people breaking free from undeserved labels. Price shared, in a personal anecdote by helping individuals in the Travis County community, "They have basically have said its one of the most positive things they volunteer for because people are so happy," as mentioned by Headtopics. However, interested parties must apply and pre-qualify; walk-ins on the day of the expo are not an option. The necessary steps towards expunction can be initiated through the county's online portal or by reaching out to the Austin Area Urban League for guidance.
