A tragic incident occurred on a road in Westchester County when a Tesla vehicle crashed and was engulfed in flames, resulting in the death of two individuals. The accident took place in the suburbs of Pelham Manor, near the Bronx border, at approximately 9:15 a.m., according to ABC7NY.
The Tesla was reportedly speeding when it crashed into a barrier. According to footage from a nearby service station, the car failed to stop at an intersection before hitting the rock boulders and catching fire. "We heard a bang and we ran toward the garage and the next thing we saw, we saw the car on fire against the wall," Chris Ganpat, owner of Manor Auto Service Center, told The Post.
The identities of the deceased have not been released as the investigation continues. Local authorities suspect that high speed may have been a significant contributing factor in the crash. Firefighters spent several hours at the scene extinguishing the flames and managing the aftermath, which included securing the Tesla's lithium ion batteries that were scattered across the roadway after the collision.
"We heard popping and we saw that it was a Tesla so we knew the battery was compromised, and was also involved with the fire," Pelham Manor Fire Chief Michael Greco told The Post. Greco noted that the ruptured battery actually made it easier for them to handle the fire. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, as community members express their sorrow during the holiday season. "I was very upset for the people inside, it is Christmas time and I feel really bad for their family right now," Ganpat added.
