Tragedy struck the Pacific Northwest's landscape of mystery and myth when two men from Portland lost their lives in Skamania County, Washington, during a search for the elusive Sasquatch. The pair, one aged 59 and the other 37, had been due back home on December 24 but were reported missing to authorities by a concerned family member the day after Christmas. According to KIRO 7, a tireless three-day search ensued, culminating in the discovery of their bodies in a heavily forested region of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
The search operation, which began to quickly escalate soon after the report was filed, included over 60 volunteer search and rescue workers. With the help of a Flock safety camera, rescuers were able to find the vehicle of the missing men near Willard, Washington. As KATU.com reported, the United States Coast Guard also provided air assistance, employing advanced F.L.I.R. technology to navigate and survey the harsh terrain despite the adverse weather that included freezing temperatures and constant precipitation.
Initial reports suggest that the cause of death for both men was exposure to the elements. The Skamania County Sheriff's Office, in a statement obtained by KGW, noted that the men appear to have died "due to exposure, based on weather conditions and ill-preparedness."
Reflecting on the concerted effort undertaken by responders, the Skamania County Sheriff's Office expressed profound gratitude for the "exceptional efforts of volunteers who sacrificed time during the holidays and worked tirelessly in harsh conditions to bring closure to grieving families." The collective effort saw personnel from multiple counties and search and rescue organizations, including Klickitat, Hood River, Wasco, and others, who they joined hands to undertake the grueling task. A hint of profound loss is evident in the Sheriff’s Office's outreach to the families, as they extended "our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the loved ones lost in this tragic incident."
