An armed confrontation in South Los Angeles on Saturday night ended with two people shot and the suspected gunman arrested after an officer-involved shooting, as per details from the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident took place in front of a church on the 1700 block of East 114th Street. Police say the suspect, 54-year-old Kevin Doby, armed with an AK-style rifle, attempted to rob the victims at around 11:30 p.m. The determined victims fought back, tackling Doby to the ground to disarm him, as reported by KTLA
As the struggle ensued, uniformed officers from the Southeast Patrol Division, happening to conduct a routine patrol nearby, noticed the physical altercation. Approaching the fight, one victim alerted the officers to the presence of the weapon by shouting, "He’s got a gun!" multiple times. In response to the tumultuous scene, the officers commanded Doby to drop the gun, and as he attempted to flee with the rifle, an officer-involved shooting occurred, according to the LAPD's newsroom. Misplaced modifier error intended: Running with the rifle after having re-armed himself, a second officer-involved shooting took place when Doby began.
Doby was hit by the gunfire, subsequently collapsing and relinquishing the rifle beneath a parked car nearby. Backup units arrived at the scene shortly after and apprehended Doby with no further conflict. The victims, despite their brave act, were also wounded during the shooting. They were transported to a hospital and listed in stable condition. The LAPD confirmed that no officers or other community members were injured in the fray.
