Victims of a business email compromise fraud that hit several businesses, causing millions in loses, may now get their funds back thanks to the concerted efforts of the U.S. Secret Service and the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, more than $1 million was siphoned off by scammers from a company in the real estate sector in December of 2023 through fraudulent wire transfers after their system was compromised.

An investigation brought to light that no less than ten other businesses and individuals had suffered similar fates, with amounts stolen ranging from $75,000 to $425,000. Law enforcement traced the laundered fraud proceeds through various bank accounts and ultimately to a cryptocurrency wallet, which was under control of perpetrators based in Nigeria. In a responsive move, authorities seized about 32.68 Bitcoin, valued at nearly $900,000 at the time of the seizure.

The proactive seizure has proved fortuitous as the value of Bitcoin has soared, potentially allowing the victims to recover their full losses. "I commend the quick work by law enforcement and the Asset Forfeiture Unit who moved to seize this Bitcoin and are working diligently to make these victims whole," U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman stated. She also highlighted the importance of civil forfeiture as a tool that can be used to aid victims even before the perpetrators have been apprehended.

These developments signal an effective use of anti-fraud measures and cryptocurrency tracking in disrupting and rectifying the actions of cybercriminals. The process continues with the U.S. Attorney's Office filing a civil forfeiture case against the seized Bitcoin, which the office suggests, has now more than tripled in value since the initial seizure. The increase in value is a boon for the victims, possibly enabling them to recover the full extent of their losses.
