The University of Minnesota is reaching new heights, according to its latest annual performance and accountability report highlighted by the Board of Regents. Enrollment surged past 70,000 this fall, including a 40-year peak of nearly 50,000 Minnesotan students. The U of M is making education more accessible and affordable — especially for households earning under $110,000 annually, displaying the lowest net cost among the state's four-year institutions. According to the report from University of Minnesota, the school has committed approximately $325 million to student support in 2024 alone.
With a keen focus on affordability, the University continues to serve Minnesota's educational and economic ambitions. President Rebecca Cunningham introduced discussions on a new strategic plan, titled Maroon, Gold & Bold, aiming to propel the University into a future of expanded horizons and possibilities for its five campuses. "It's time to dream even bigger," Cunningham stated, "It’s time to set a bold new vision for the University of Minnesota’s future, one that pushes boundaries and redefines what’s possible for our five strong campuses."
Moreover, the U of M's track record of fostering student success is evident with high graduation rates and impressive post-graduation employment numbers exceeding the national average by 7.8%. These achievements reflect the University's staunch commitment not only to education but also to research and innovation. A striking figure of $1.35 billion in research expenditures and a notable rank of No. 12 among U.S. public research universities solidify U of M's standing in the realm of academic inquiry and societal contribution.
In addition to academic pursuits, U of M's influence stretches across Minnesota's communities, with researchers and students actively engaged in projects statewide. The University's Extension program boasts nearly 1,900 community partnerships and has maintained strong ties with each of Minnesota's 87 counties — a testament to the institution's expansive impact. Recognized for its sustainable practices, the U of M System has earned a joint 5th in the U.S. in the Times Higher Ed Sustainable Development Goals Impact Rankings, a feat of notable mention in a state known for its challenging northern climate.
The accolades continue with the University's innovations leading to a record 25 startups in 2024, demonstrating its relentless push for cutting-edge technology and sustainability. Among these startups is Niron Magnetics, developing the world's first high-performance sustainable magnet, poised to revolutionize the EV and clean energy sectors. These strides in entrepreneurship underscore the University's expanding role in fueling economic and technological progress.
University sports cannot be overlooked, with a nod to the Golden Gophers football team, who recently snagged the Paul Bunyan’s Axe trophy from their Big Ten rivals, the Wisconsin Badgers in a 24-7 victory. This demonstration of athletic excellence is evidence of the University’s broader pursuit of excellence across all domains. The Regents collectively commended the team's achievement, an encouraging reflection of the school's commitment to fostering talent in various fields.
As Minnesota's flagship educational institution looks forward to the next chapter, the Board of Regents invites public input for the development of a new strategic plan through its Virtual Forum. In the meantime, the Board’s next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 13-14, keeping the dialogue open for further growth and achievement.
