As the holiday cheer winds down, the City of Upper Arlington is gearing up its recycling efforts to manage the seasonal surplus of waste. To reduce landfill clutter, various eco-friendly programs are in place to help residents sustainably dispose of holiday-specific refuse.
Residents can now easily recycle their holiday lights until January 31. Collection bins have been set up at the Municipal Services Center on 3600 Tremont Road. In a statement obtained by the City of Upper Arlington's official website, citizens are reminded to "remove all bags or other material" and to ensure that "light strands and other electronics should never be placed in your blue recycle containers." Those looking to discard their lights after the holiday season can take advantage of this program, and for year-round electronics recycling, the Electronic Waste Collection site at 4100 Roberts Road is consistently available.
Alongside the lights, the city has made provisions for Christmas tree collection. Upper Arlington's Solid Waste provider, Local Waste, will pick up live Christmas trees on regular collection days. Still, the city requests that residents remove all decorations and place trees at the curb by 7 am. For trees over eight feet in height, the city asks residents to please cut them in half. Moreover, live trees can be dropped off at Ohio Mulch at the same address above, and proof of residency may be required.
The food waste composting program is a key element of the city's eco-friendly initiative. According to their website, three drop-off locations are available for the convenience of all residents wishing to divert food scraps from becoming unnecessary landfill content. They stress the importance of adhering strictly to program rules—such as "Food waste ONLY" and "DO NOT use plastic bags! BPI Certified compostable liners ONLY." According to the City of Upper Arlington. The community is encouraged to use these services, especially as the green bins stand ready at various points across the city, including the Municipal Services Center, Amelita Mirolo Barn, and Fancyburg Park.
The spirit of sustainability continues with the Residential Electronic Waste Drop-off Location at the Public Service Center on 4100 Roberts Road. Open on weekdays, this center accepts a wide array of electronic waste, which should not be discarded in your household trash, the city advises. Accepted items range from household electronics and small appliances to office equipment and computer accessories. Residents are invited to clear their post-holiday clutter in a manner that benefits the environment.
After completing the festive cleanup, the city announced solid waste holiday delays. Collections zones for Christmas Day, December 25, and New Year's Day, January 1, 2025, will experience a one-day delay. Residents can factor in these adjustments to their waste disposal schedule for a hassle-free holiday conclusion.
