In what can only be described as a sports miracle, the UTEP Miners came from behind to beat their heated rivals boldly, the New Mexico State Aggies, in the latest chapter of the Battle of I-10. UTEP took home a thrilling 42-35 victory in Scotty Walden’s inaugural rivalry game, marking a significant triumph for the team. Despite being outplayed in offensive yardage and time of possession, UTEP showcased their grit in an emphatic second-half performance.
Early in the game, the Aggies appeared to be in complete control, with a 17-point lead at one juncture. However, UTEP’s resiliency shone through as they rallied to secure 28 points in a dominant second half. The Miners strategically used NMSU’s errors, including an interception and two fumble recoveries, turning them into crucial points. "This is a program defining victory," said Walden, as obtained by KTSM, highlighting the importance of the win within UTEP's football program.
Adding to their tactical victories, UTEP’s special teams delivered a standout performance, with a jaw-dropping 93-yard punt return by Kam Thomas, giving the team not only a 10-point lead but also injecting a massive dose of momentum to kick-start the last quarter. NM State's head coach Tony Sanchez lamented the missed opportunities and costly mistakes, saying, "That’s 21 points of complete mishaps in a game – a game where you literally just handed it away," according to KTSM.
The hard-fought victory brought the Silver Spade and the Mayor's Cup back to El Paso, solidifying UTEP's lead in the all-time series to 59-39-2 over the Aggies, as reported by KTSM. Both teams closed out the 2024 season with identical 3-9 records, according to El Paso Times. Comfortably can be said that the UTEP team faced numerous challenges throughout the season, including a match against SEC powerhouse Tennessee, but the focus remained on ending the year with a victory over NM State, as Walden emphasized the capabilities of the Aggies' rush offense before the game, as reported by UTEP Athletics.
