In a recent development that has shaken the Vancouver community, Shadbreon Gatson, a 43-year-old teacher at Hudson's Bay High School, is facing charges of sexual misconduct following allegations stemming from an incident in 2013 with a 16-year-old student.
According to The Oregonian, Gatson was arrested last Friday with court documents revealing that the 2013 internal investigation of the teacher by Vancouver Public Schools resurfaced after the victim, now an adult, brought forth the allegation; in an already tense situation whispers of another incident in 2024 have caught the ears of prosecutors who are pushing to uncover a pattern of misconduct that seems to stretch back to 2009 when Gatson was issued a letter of direction on how to interact with female students.
The case, which is now front and center, has led Vancouver Public Schools to confirm in their correspondence with parents that Gatson was placed on administrative leave in November, before his eventual arrest, this information comes from a letter obtained by KGW News. In a statement delivered in court on Monday, it was divulged that there are multiple points of concern including letters of admonishment Gatson received in 2017 for his overstep in maintaining boundaries with two female students.
The community's discomfort and rage were palpable, with Susan Brown, a parent of a current Hudson's Bay High School student, expressing her horror to KATU News about the school potentially harboring a "predator" and the deep impact the revelation has had on her son, who was a student in Gatson’s class amidst these procedures which casts a pall of betrayal over the school’s image this has become a nightmare that has echoed back from the hallow corridors of the past, gripping the heart of present trust within the community.
The school district has not provided additional details citing the ongoing investigation, leaving a concerned community seeking answers and justice for those affected by the allegations against Gatson, as they struggle to come to terms with the prospect that such misconduct could have been hide in plain sight for over a decade.
