The tragic story of Elliot Onil Eastman, a 26-year-old YouTuber originally from Hinesburg, Vermont, has developed further, as Philippine police have now suggested that he likely died from gunshot wounds sustained during his kidnapping. According to a MassLive report, Eastman was abducted and shot twice with an M16 rifle on October 17 in the coastal town of Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte, a region known for grappling with security issues.
The abduction itself was executed by gunmen posing as police officers, and despite their masquerade, Eastman tried to violently resist, a decision that likely led to his being fatally shot. "We are constrained to believe that he has died. All of the information that we have points to that," regional police spokesperson Lt. Col. Ramoncelio Sawan stated during a briefing. This information has been partly sourced from a relative of one of the suspects and was later corroborated by a key suspect's sworn testimony. However, Eastman's body has not been recovered, and police are still holding on to what Sawan described as "a little bit of hope" that Eastman might be found alive, as reported by a CBS news article.
Eastman, who had documented his life in the Philippines through his YouTube and Facebook pages, had returned to Sibuco for his wife's graduation at the time of the kidnapping. The search for Eastman has resulted in a number of arrests, and subsequent gunbattles with the police have left three suspects dead. The whereabouts of Eastman have remained a mystery since October, sparking widespread search operations and investigations.
Local authorities have been diligently reaching out to those connected to the case, ensuring that Eastman's Filipino wife and the U.S. Embassy in Manila were promptly informed about the reports of his death. The U.S. Embassy has acknowledged awareness of the situation and is coordinating with Philippine authorities on the matter, "but did not comment further due to privacy considerations," as per CBS News. The nature of the crime has led officials to conclude that the suspects are common criminals and not affiliated with any separatist groups known for ransom kidnappings in the region.
In the past, the southern Philippines has been tormented by violence and kidnappings, primarily targeting foreigners. Despite a peace agreement reached in 2014, which eased widespread fighting, smaller insurgent groups have persisted. The Abu Sayyaf group, notorious for targeting Westerners, has been weakened but does still pose a threat, as demonstrated by the historical accounts of kidnapped and killed Americans, including Martin Burnham. Meanwhile, the investigation into Elliot Eastman's disappearance and suspected murder continues as authorities work to close the case, which has captured the attention of both locals and an international community.
