A tragic incident in St. Joseph County has claimed the life of a 10-year-old child, according to recent reports. Yesterday morning, a vehicle collision resulted in the fatality of one child and the subsequent arrest of a 29-year-old driver from Vicksburg. FOX 17 reported that deputies were dispatched to an accident at the intersection of Banker Street and Balk Road in Sherman Township, where initially it was believed multiple children had been hit; however, it was later clarified that only a single child was struck.
Details from WWMT reveal that the child was part of a group of kids riding their bikes to school when the incident occurred. The group was reportedly traveling in the same lane as the vehicle. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred as the driver was on his way to work.
Further information provided by the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office indicated that the driver is being held on felony charges and is expected to be arraigned today. According to a statement reported by WOODTV, the driver was arrested and taken into custody following the incident. The sheriff's office has not released the driver's name, but authorities are asking anyone with additional information to reach out to Sgt. Paulino Hernandez at 269.467.9045 extension 317.
