A Wareham man has been handed a sentence of more than seven years in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl distribution conspiracy that led to a fatal overdose. Troy Jones, aged 40, was sentenced to 92 months by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper yesterday. Following his prison term, Jones will also have three years of supervised release and has been ordered to pay restitution for the funeral expenses of the victim, according to a Justice Department statement.

In August 2024, Jones admitted to one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death and to a count of distributing fentanyl resulting in death. Jones and his co-conspirator, Kayla Nightingale, were first indicted in October 2020, following a federal grand jury’s findings. It is reported that from January 2019 to at least April 3, 2019, Jones and Nightingale distributed fentanyl in Wareham, ultimately leading to the overdose of a 42-year-old local man on April 2, 2019.

Nightingale, who also pleaded guilty this past August, has a sentencing date set for January 8, 2025. The penalties she faces are yet to be disclosed. Details regarding the extent of her involvement in the conspiracy and any additional charges have not been made public.

This case has been brought to a close through the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies that include the Drug Enforcement Administration's New England Field Division and Massachusetts State Police, alongside local Wareham authorities. U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy, Acting Special Agent in Charge Stephen Belleau, and Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey D. Noble, together with Wareham Police Chief Walter Correia, announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Dolan of the Criminal Division was in charge of prosecuting the case.
