The National Weather Service in Washington D.C has issued an update on the changing weather conditions set to affect the area today. According to the NWS forecast, residents can expect a day filled with rain, potential thunderstorms, and significant wind gusts. Rain is set to occur before 7 am, transitioning into possible thunderstorms between 7 am and 10 am, and then steady rain to follow. This downpour is expected to bring about 1 to 2 inches of new precipitation. In the midst of this wet turmoil, temperatures are predicted to peak at about 64 degrees Fahrenheit by 10 am before taking a sharp nosedive to around 46 for the rest of the day.
Compounding the precipitation, breezy conditions are on the docket, with a south wind starting out at 9 to 14 mph before a pivot to northwest winds blowing at 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon, potentially gusting up to 39 mph. The evening brings a reprieve, as the chance of rain drops to a slight 20%, and the skies are expected to clear gradually after early cloudiness, setting the stage for a low temperature near 32 degrees with persistent breezy conditions, as detailed by NWS.
As we venture into the tail end of the week, Thursday promises sunny skies despite the chill, with highs lingering around a crisp 42 degrees and winds continuing to make their presence known with gusts as high as 28 mph. The night will usher in partly cloudy conditions and the mercury dipping to about 26 degrees. Come Friday, the sun continues its reign with highs again locked around 42 degrees.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the NWS anticipates partly sunny skies on Saturday with highs inching up to 45 degrees. However, rain is expected to make a comeback late Saturday night, with a 40% chance of precipitation leading into a rainy Sunday. Consistency in variety, it seems, is the hallmark of this forecast, as the likelihood of rain prevails into early next week. Monday and Tuesday retain overcast skies and the persistent possibility of rain, culminating in a partly sunny Tuesday wherein temperatures climb close to a mildly warmer 58 degrees.
Hazardous weather warnings accompany these predicted conditions. Visibility on the upper Chesapeake Bay waters is reduced to less than one nautical mile at times through 11 AM today due to dense fog, while a Gale Warning has been called into effect for all waters through this evening.
