Wayland residents are bracing for a temporary shiver in the dark, as Consumers Energy schedules a planned power outage to conduct equipment upgrades. More than 3,000 households will be affected from 11 p.m. today until 6 a.m. tomorrow, according to WWMT. The utility company's spokesperson, Brian Wheeler, expressed the urgency of the maintenance work, "If we didn’t do this work, then we really are taking the chance the risk that we can have an outage that we’re not prepared for."
Preparing for the outage, one Wayland resident, Vernon Bullers, plans to "crank up the heat a little bit" ahead of the power cut, as told to WZZM 13. Bullers, joining a host of residents with a constructive take on the situation, believe in making short-term sacrifices for more stable long-term service. Despite these preparations, the cold weather, expected in the 30s, remains a critical point of concern for the community, particularly those who may struggle to keep warm, including the elderly and those with medical needs.
Amid the buzz of dissent and discomfort stirring online, questions arise concerning the timing of this service interruption. "We do prioritize the safety of our customers of our coworkers, and we do look at the weather forecast is one of many factors that go into the timing of something like this," Wheeler explained in an interview with WWMT. This sentiment is echoed by the utility's commitment to public safety, as manifested in their choice of weekends and nighttime for such disruptions to minimize the impact, with the Wayland Fire Department opening its doors as a warming center during the outage.
Consumer Energy's decision to go forward despite the lower temperatures has pressed some to make use of generators safely, a matter the Wayland Fire Department has addressed through social media. They advise, "Use generators outdoors and at least 20 feet away from building openings," in tips shared on their platforms to help residents weather the outage safely, as detailed in coverage by WZZM 13. Meanwhile, the department echoes a community's resolve to pull together, stating, "they have a responsibility to serve their community."
