In the spirit of fostering community connections, West Sacramento City Council members recently joined seniors for a meal at Café Yolo within the Community Center. According to a release by the City of West Sacramento, this gathering on December 11 highlights a regular initiative where local seniors come together for a communal meal every Wednesday, an event that's part of the Meals on Wheels Yolo program.
The program, integral to the community, delivers around 1,000 meals per week to 239 homebound seniors within West Sacramento. It's a massive operation fuelled by the heart and dedication of 72 volunteers who manage to dish out approximately 56,000 meals annually. Mayor Guerrero, alongside Councilmembers Orozco and Alcala, were present to offer their support and appreciation, sharing sentiments about community significance and senior engagement, echoing a broader commitment to the wellbeing of elderly residents.
During the event, the Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers received recognition for their tireless efforts. Their work ensures that nourishment and a sense of connection reach those who might otherwise be isolated. In her comments, Mayor Guerrero mentioned, "the importance of community and connecting with seniors," an ethos that resonates at the core of the program's mission, according to the City of West Sacramento's release.
Since its soft launch in July, the West Sacramento congregate dining program has been maintaining a "steady momentum." To expand its reach and inclusivity, the City has initiated a transport service called Via, offering rides for seniors to the Community Center. This logistical support is critical as it breaks down barriers to access, enabling more seniors to join in the fellowship and receive nutritious meals in a warm, communal setting, as per the City of West Sacramento.
