Pittsburgh residents can expect a series of low-pressure systems to bring rounds of rain starting tonight and continuing through Monday. According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, PA, in their area forecast discussion, temperatures are also predicted to remain above normal into early next week before a shift in the weather pattern brings a return of colder temperatures and potential snow.
Today's temperatures are expected to rise around 10 to 15 degrees above the daily average, despite limited sunshine. However, the skies will mostly be dominated by mid- and high-level clouds. The evening will mark the advancement of rain, particularly in areas southeast of Pittsburgh, as a weak warm front moves in and jet ascent intensifies.
As we head into the weekend, there may be a temporary break in the precipitation on Saturday afternoon and evening. However, heavier rainfall is anticipated on Sunday, likely affecting the West Virginia high terrain and adjacent areas the most. During this period, temperatures could be 15-20 degrees above the daily norm. The potential for heavy rains comes as ensemble mean Precipitable Water (PWAT) values reach their daily maximum, which could lead to more substantial downpours, especially near the Monongahela basin.
Toward the start of next week, a lingering low-pressure system could result in continued rain showers on Monday. By Tuesday, another system is expected to bring more rain, persisting until it transitions into possible snow mixing over northwest Pennsylvania and the higher terrain come Wednesday. As the long-term outlook spells a broad eastern United States trough developing, residents should prepare for a change to below-normal temperatures and periodic snowfall, particularly for Lake Erie shorelines and higher elevations southeast of Pittsburgh.
