The White Settlement Police Department is reaching out to Spanish-speaking residents through a new initiative designed to build stronger community ties and improve their quality of life. The department announced the launch of UNIDOS, a program designed to foster communication and trust between law enforcement and the Hispanic community. According to a social media post by the White Settlement Police Department, UNIDOS has already seen successful adoption by several other agencies.
The initiative will kick off with its first meeting on January 8, which will run from 6 pm to 8 pm at the White Settlement Police Department. During these gatherings, different speakers will present topics that aim to resonate with the concerns and interests of the Hispanic community, not just issues directly related to policing. "Each meeting will feature different speakers and topics that are not necessarily police-related, but rather subjects of interest and relevance to the Hispanic community," the White Settlement Police Department's post outlined.
Community programs like UNIDOS are part of a growing trend among law enforcement agencies to engage with non-English-speaking residents in more substantive and culturally sensitive ways. By including subjects beyond the scope of law enforcement, the program seems committed to acknowledging the full spectrum of community life and interests.
