Wilmington's annual Light Up the Square event returns tonight, featuring a tree-lighting ceremony and festive holiday activities to spread seasonal cheer throughout the city. According to the City of Wilmington's announcement, Mayor Mike Purzycki and Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz are calling on residents to join them in Rodney Square, located at 10th and Market Streets, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to participate in the celebration.
The event will feature live performances, including tunes sung by the Gateway Charter School Chorus, as well as appearances by Disney Princesses Elsa and Ariel for the younger crowd, where Santa Claus and Rudolph will also be making rounds. For families looking to engage in the seasonal spirit, activities such as face painting are on the roster in addition to free food for children and educational initiatives about nutrition. Hot chocolate will also be served to warm up the night.
For those arriving early or lingering later DE.CO Food Hall is set to host a holiday pre-party starting at 4:30 p.m. where attendees can partake in drink specials and Christmas music before the main event and an after-party that will continue until 9:00 p.m. Those planning to drive to Downtown Wilmington should take note that Market Street will be closed to vehicles between 10th and 11th streets from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., ensuring safety and ample space for the festivities.
