New Yorkers are bracing for a bout of inclement weather, as the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory, effective until 10 p.m. EST this evening across southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and southeast New York, including all five boroughs of New York City. The advisory warns of potentially dangerous winds with gusts as high as 48 mph. According to the detailed forecasts, these gusty winds are expected to accompany a 40 percent chance of snow showers before noon today, with temperatures hovering in the high 30s and wind chill values dipping between 20 and 30 degrees.
The forecast for Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx indicates similar conditions today with windy chills making the air feel markedly colder than the actual thermometer readings. Staten Island, facing west winds between 20 to 26 mph, can expect slightly higher temperatures, around 40 degrees, "TonightMostly clear, with a low around 30. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Breezy, with a west wind 16 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph," the forecast for Staten Island details.
For those making plans for the upcoming days, the weather service anticipates no hazardous conditions that would meet their warning criteria after today. The forecasts for Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island point to a reprieve from the snow but predict a 50 to 60 percent chance of rain by Monday, with highs reaching the low 50s.
While the advisory and gale warnings currently in place call for a cautious approach to outdoor activities, individuals are also reminded by weather officials to secure outdoor objects and be prepared for possible power outages. "This Hazardous Weather Outlook provides a summary of potential widespread hazardous weather events that may reach NWS warning criteria," stated the National Weather Service.
