Heads up, Winter Haven drivers: Shell Road is closing for a week starting tomorrow. The closure is part of the construction for the Harmony at Lake Eloise subdivision, necessitating some rerouting for those who typically travel this stretch.
For folks accustomed to taking the southbound corridor along West Lake Eloise Drive, time to map a new route. Officials have plotted a detour that will send you spinning around at the Eloise Loop Road roundabout, then shooting westerly to Rifle Range Road (County Road 655). As for the travelers threading the eastbound needle along Shell Road, your dance begins by taking American Superior Boulevard and Hoover Road in Eagle Lake to dodge the work zone, before dropping south on Rifle Range Road and then curving east at Eloise Loop Road up to the aforementioned roundabout.
The interruption is reported by Polk County, which specified that while Shell Road itself will be just a week's inconvenience, related lane closures with flag conductors are on the playlist for another three weeks. It's the perfect storm for rush-hour regulars to meet longer commute times. The advice on the street is to tack on a few extra minutes when passing through.
During peak travel times, when the arteries of our city are most congested with the lifeblood of daily commerce and connection, motorists can prepare for an elongated journey. There's some solace, perhaps, in the meticulous planning behind these detours, thanks to figures like Bill Skelton from Polk County Roads & Drainage Division, who stands at the ready for any navigation conundrums you might have at (863) 535-2200.
Adapting to the throes of infrastructure improvement reminds us that growth often comes with some degree of discomfort. Nonetheless, with a bit of patience and some creative rerouting, Winter Haven's drivers will no doubt weather the temporary upheaval and perhaps, discover new routes previously untraveled in their daily commutes.
