A transit incident occurred this morning on the Lodge Freeway when a driver traveling in the wrong direction collided head-on with a Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus. The wrong-way driver, a 58-year-old man operating a Ram pickup truck, was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle caught fire upon impact, according to Michigan State Police, CBS News Detroit reported.
The collision, which happened around 4:40 AM near Log Cabin Street, resulted in no passengers being on the bus during the time of the crash, and the bus driver was taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, the accident forced the closure of the southbound lanes and police have not yet determined where the vehicle entered the freeway or the driver's reason for going the opposite direction. “At this time it hasn’t been determined where the wrong way driver entered the freeway and why they were going the wrong way,” said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw in a statement obtained by MSP Second District's social media post.
