Early Tuesday morning commuters in south Austin experienced delays following an incident involving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 35. According to KXAN, the truck stalled and began to spill fuel on the northbound side near Onion Creek, prompting authorities to temporarily close a section of the highway.
The Austin Police Department reportedly responded to the scene at the 12000 block of south IH 35 northbound around 7 a.m. The stalled vehicle, which had crashed into a barrier, added to the morning's travel disruptions as icy road conditions were believed to possibly have played a role in the accident. To swiftly manage traffic flow, authorities diverted vehicles onto the service road while they worked to clear the main lanes.
Travel resumed at a regular pace by around 8:20 a.m. when the interstate was reopened. Traffic resumed its regular flow after the cleanup of the spill and removal of the commercial vehicle had been completed.
Additional challenges were present across the region. Yahoo News reported that Austin-Travis County EMS emphasized the risks of the icy roads by advising people to avoid driving unless facing an emergency. Throughout the morning, medics responded to various collisions across Austin and Travis County.
