A construction site in north Phoenix became the scene of a tragic accident after an 18-year-old worker was killed on January 4. FOX 10 Phoenix reports that the young man, identified as Omar Marino Alonso, was found deceased at the Verdin master-planned community site following a rollover crash involving a water truck.

The police were alerted to the incident around 2 p.m., near Sonoran Desert Drive and 7th Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered Alonso with obvious signs of trauma beside a significantly damaged water truck. It has been indicated that Alonso was thrown out of the vehicle and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. AZFamily notes that speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky shed light on the circumstances of the incident, describing how the vehicle "lost control and rolled over" while descending a hill, which resulted in Alonso being ejected from the truck. "He sustained significant injuries once he got ejected, which resulted in his death," Sgt. Krynsky told FOX 10 Phoenix. The local police department's investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine further details surrounding the crash.

Taylor Morrison, the construction company responsible for the site has expressed condolences. "We are deeply saddened by the fatality of a contractor that happened over the weekend at one of our construction sites and our thoughts are with their family," a representative said in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. The company insists that safety remains a top priority and has committed to upholding strict safety practices. However, questions remain as to whether Alonso was wearing any restraints at the time of the incident, a detail that Sgt. Krynsky confirmed it would be "determined through the conclusion of the investigation."
