A Puna woman, aged 21, is fighting for her life in critical condition after being struck by a car Wednesday night. The incident took place on Highway 11 near the 10-mile marker in Kurtistown, as reported by the Hawaii Police Department.

According to the details, police arrived at the scene at 7:56 p.m., following the distressing incident. It appears that the vehicle involved, a 2016 Honda CRV, was being driven by a 74-year-old man from Mountain View, as it traveled in a northbound direction on the highway. Unfortunately, it was then that the vehicle collided with the pedestrian, who, multiple witnesses confirmed, was already on the roadway before impact.

The young woman was found unresponsive and quickly transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center for emergency treatment. Meanwhile, the driver of the Honda remained unharmed in the unfortunate event.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing with the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit taking the lead. So far, authorities have ruled out speed, alcohol, and drugs as contributing factors to the collision, according to the initial police report. A negligent injury investigation is currently underway and those with knowledge about this incident are encouraged to come forward.
