San Bernardino County law enforcement agencies have wrapped up a week-long operation dubbed "Operation Consequences," targeting drugs, guns, and gang-related criminal activity in several communities, as per a report made available by the Sheriff's Office. The multi-agency crackdown, which took place from January 13 to January 19, resulted in the arrest of 59 individuals and the seizure of 13 firearms, including two untraceable ghost guns. The operation also led to the recovery of an undisclosed quantity of illegal narcotics.
The focused suppression efforts were a response to rising concerns over quality-of-life issues within the county. These concerns have pushed local law enforcement to aggressively seek to curb violent crime and disrupt criminal operations. Agencies participating in the operation included the Sheriff’s Gangs/Narcotics Division, Specialized Enforcement Division, and patrol stations, alongside the California Highway Patrol and others.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, the operation was conducted in specific areas known to be problem spots for criminal activity, including parts of San Bernardino, Rialto, Fontana, Colton, and Bloomington. Seven search warrants were served during this period, enabling officers to engage with gang members and individuals prohibited from owning firearms. The department has noted that Proposition 36, enacted following the voters' approval, played a crucial role in the operation. The new legal provisions allowed deputies to levy enhanced charges against certain arrestees, preventing cite and release before court appearances.
The Sheriff's Department has stated that Operation Consequences will continue over the coming months with the objective to further reduce violent crime, dismantle targeted criminal gangs, and apprehend those involved in the illegal arms trade.
