An unsettling incident unfolded at Klein Oak High School when a substitute teacher was caught watching pornography on a personal device during classroom hours. Kenneth Hartley, 81, was the substitute in question, arrested on charges for displaying harmful material to a minor, a Class A misdemeanor potentially carrying a one-year jail sentence. ABC13 reported that court documents accused Hartley of "intentionally" displaying a video depicting "deviant sexual intercourse."
The situation was rapidly brought under control after students reported their observations to school administrators. However, Klein ISD's spokeswoman initially declined to fully confirm the details when prompted. Nevertheless, court documentation and student testimonies have established Hartley as the individual responsible for the incident. According to a report by KPRC 2, the district spokesperson seemed to carefully navigate the queries, stating, "Thank you for your patience as their weekend crew processes my request for information."
Amid the controversy, video footage from the classroom was obtained by KPRC 2 News, prompting the station to make editorial decisions to protect the privacy of the involved minors and the accused, blurring faces and omitting certain audio elements. This footage further confirmed the identity of Hartley seated behind the front desk of the classroom. Local authorities apprehended Hartley, who has since been released from custody on a $100 bond.
Following the event, Klein ISD was quick to act, immediately terminating Hartley's employment and ensuring that he will never again work in the district. Hartley, a certified educator since 1966, now faces legal proceedings, having been charged with an offense that directly jeopardizes the welfare of students he was charged to safely guide. "The former substitute has been terminated and will never work in Klein ISD again," stated the district, as per a KPRC 2 release. They further confirmed his custody status and their intentions to report the incident to all appropriate agencies.
