UPDATE: Following a harrowing ordeal that sparked a widespread Amber Alert, two young children from Kings County have been found safe. The girls, Arya Maldonado, 3, and Alana, 2, were reportedly taken by their father, Jonathan Maldonado Cruz, after he allegedly murdered their mother. According to KTLA, the children were subject to an Amber Alert notification sent across Southern California on Wednesday morning.
The suspect, 23-year-old Maldonado Cruz, was believed to have fled potentially toward Mexico with the girls. The Kings County Sheriff's Department in their pursuit involved both state and federal law enforcement to track down Cruz. In a swift resolution to the alarming situation, the California Highway Patrol canceled the Amber Alert by Thursday, indicating the sisters had been located. The suspect is now in custody, and the children are confirmed to be safe, as reported by Patch. The details of their recovery are yet to be disclosed.
The devastating backdrop to this incident includes the death of the children's mother, identified by family members as 22-year-old Madeline Rose Cuevas of Hanford, a small city about 200 miles north of Los Angeles. She was found dead from a gunshot wound at her home in Hanford on Tuesday, as per Hoodline. Detectives working on this case believe that the suspect took the toddlers from their home which prompted law enforcement agencies across numerous Southern California counties to be on high alert.
As the investigation continues, the effectiveness of the Amber Alert system in this case highlights its critical role in the swift recovery of abducted children. In a statement obtained by Patch, gratitude from the Kings County Sheriff's Office appeared on Facebook, "Thank you to everyone who assisted in spreading the word to helplocate Alana and Arya." The department also thanked the community for its quick response which led to the expeditious development of the case.
