Akron Public Schools have condemned the appearance of the posters, with a statement describing them as offensive and indicative of values misaligned with those of the city.
The debate surrounding Dr. Robinson's leadership style has intensified following accusations from Mark Williamson, a former Communications Director for the district. Williamson penned a letter accusing Robinson of using derogatory slurs towards two female reporters. According to a report from the Akron Beacon Journal, the superintendent also faces allegations of abusive behavior towards some staff members and demonstrates, perhaps, a pattern of inappropriate conduct.
Amidst these accusations, the Akron Education Association has raised serious concerns. "To use the kind of language he’s used, against in this case female reporters, coupled with language he’s used against employees and students is very concerning," Association President Pat Shipe told Cleveland19. "And definitely not the example we want to set for our students or any children." The Association further alleges that over 20 grievances have been filed, and yet the superintendent remains in his position even as the Board of Education has begun an internal investigation.
The Akron Police Department, now aware of the situation due to the district’s recent press release, will evaluate the incidents while considering First Amendment rights, Capt. Mike Miller said in a statement obtained by the Akron Beacon Journal. "We have already communicated with APS and discussed the next steps," he explained, highlighting the balance that must be struck between addressing potential criminal acts and acknowledging constitutional protections.
