The Arlington Public Library is ushering in the Lunar New Year with various cultural events open to the community. As people worldwide celebrate the arrival of the first new moon on the lunar calendar, the library has organized a sequence of programs aimed at entertainment and education, all at no cost. There's no need to sign up in advance, which makes swinging by for a bit of festivity and learning as easy as deciding on a whim.
The presentations, which include musical shows, storytimes, craft sessions, and art workshops, are geared towards participants of various ages, ensuring a little something for everyone. According to the City of Arlington, on Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Downtown Library, the Spectrum Chamber Music Society will bring in Xiao Hua Sheng, the famed violinist and Nanjing University of Arts professor, for a Lunar New Year Musical Presentation. Following that, on January 27, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Arlington Branch, families can engage in a special storytime incorporating lunar-themed narratives and activities.
Moreover, later that same day, at 4:30 p.m., the Southwest Branch invites families for a Lunar New Year Special at the Family Craft Night, where creativity and collaboration come to life through themed DIY crafts suitable for ages five and up. Moving into February, the exploration of Lunar New Year themes continues with a "Splash of Color: A Tween Watercolor Workshop" at the Southwest Branch on February 11. Participants will dive into the technique of Chinese brush painting, focusing on bamboo art as outlined in the Arlington Public Library's recent announcement.
Another hands-on activity, "Draw With Me," takes place on February 13 at the Woodland West Branch from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. It offers insights into the history of Lion Dancing, an integral aspect of Lunar New Year celebrations, with attendees getting the chance to produce their artistic interpretations of this vibrantly traditional dance, as per the event listing.
