As the City of Arlington braces for an unforgiving cold, the local government and community organizations are stepping up efforts to ensure homeless individuals have access to warm shelters. With temperatures plummeting to 39 degrees or below, emergency shelter plans have been activated since yesterday until Friday, Jan. 10, according to a statement on the city's website.
Arlington Life Shelter and The Salvation Army provide sanctuary from the cold for those without homes. Intake at Arlington Life Shelter, located at 325 W. Division St., begins at 2 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m., while The Salvation Army, situated at 712 W. Abram St., opens its doors from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Both places require IDs for admission, although exceptions are made for police drop-offs. In addition, meals will be provided to the guests seeking refuge from the inclement weather.
For individuals seeking warmth during daytime hours when shelters may not operate, all Arlington Library locations are available as warming centers during their standard operating hours. The George W. Hawkes Downtown Library and other branches across the city offer a haven from the cold, with varying hours that can be found on the City of Arlington website.
Moreover, The Arlington Animal Services Shelter accepts pets for homeless individuals with furry companions, allowing these important community members to remain safe and warm as capacity allows. Those needing such services are encouraged to contact the shelter at 817-459-5898 for assistance.
The Salvation Army also invites community members who wish to volunteer their time and aid to contact them directly.
