In a move to regain consumer confidence after a spate of network disruptions, AT&T has announced the introduction of a billing credit system for customers experiencing service outages, as reported Wednesday by Fox 32 Chicago. The telecommunications company will credit users for a full day’s service if their phone service is interrupted for over an hour or if their fiber connectivity goes down for more than 20 minutes.

The new scheme, dubbed the "AT&T Guarantee," aims to enhance customer experience across network reliability, customer service, and promotional offers, AT&T is setting a precedent in the industry as the first and only carrier to offer such a commitment for both wireless and fiber networks executives highlighted the strategy as part of an effort to restore its reputation and market share following a nationwide outage in February 2024 that impacted millions, AT&T executive Jennifer Robertson mentioned that they were "losing share in the industry for a significant period of time" before deciding to take steps to rebuild trust with their customer base.

Eligibility for the credit requires an outage affecting at least 10 or more towers with customers connected to an impacted tower during the incident; however, there are conditions, as per WGN-TV, such as exclusions for events out of the carrier's control, including natural disasters and third-party caused disruptions, and the policy is only applicable to customers in "good standing."

Jenifer Robertson, executive vice president and general manager of AT&T Mass Markets and Mobility, underscored the company's investment of over "$140 billion in our network and almost a billion dollars in customer care and operations," which she believes has positioned AT&T to set a new industry standard for service reliability the "AT&T Guarantee" set to be implemented on today, with affected customers to be automatically notified of their eligibility for service credits, an initiative that bolsters the carrier's competitive edge while also potentially setting a new benchmark for consumer expectations in the telecom sector.
