Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is not only a major travel hub but also a culinary hotspot. In 2024, the airport saw a surge in food sales and community engagement. According to a recent City of Austin blog post, tacos were a major favorite among passengers. In May alone, of the 2,068,404 travelers, nearly half indulged in tacos, with sales reaching 1,151,955 across four vendors.
The Salt Lick BBQ at AUS reportedly needed a lot of muscle, carving through 170,000 pounds of brisket last year. And for those with a sweet spot for breakfast, 24 Diner kept their hands full—literally, cracking over 31,000 eggs to meet the demand for that essential airport brunch.
AUS has also been a stage for Texas businesses to shine. The Saxon Pub broadened its Texas-themed drink offerings with Garrison Brothers Barrel-Aged Old Fashioneds. In contrast, Tito's Daytrip gave travelers a lighter option, featuring Austin's own St. Cecilia Soda Company's zero-sugar, flavored sparkling water, as per the City of Austin.
Retail therapy was in full swing at the airport with sales figures reflecting a strong attachment to Austin culture—2,546 UT hats and 7,607 Keep Austin Weird shirts found new owners, evidence of Austin's eventful community spirit. Amidst the shopping frenzy, Delaware North partnered with The Marine Toys for Tots for a holiday donation drive, bringing festive joy to families through charitable contributions from travelers and staff alike, as reported by the City of Austin.
AUS's involvement with local events like Austin's Mac & Cheese Festival and the Food & Wine Festival—garnering a People's Choice Award and serving Texas wines respectively—highlighted the airport's commitment to community engagement and support for local businesses.
