Barrio Logan's Las Cuatro Milpas Reopens with "A" Rating After Addressing Health Violations and Financial WoesSource: Google Street View

After a three-week health hiatus due to "major" vermin and other violations, Las Cuatro Milpas, an institution in San Diego's Barrio Logan, has reopened its doors with a fresh "A" rating. The 91-year-old Mexican restaurant, known for its homemade tortillas and slow-cooked meats, was given clearance last Friday after remedying the violations, which included issues with plumbing and vermin-proofing. Despite ongoing financial challenges, including outstanding property and sales taxes, the eatery has recommitted to serving its community.

Since its founding in 1933 by Petra and Natividad Estudillo, Las Cuatro Milpas has been a cultural staple in the neighborhood. The recent troubles started when county inspectors flagged the establishment on December 30, 2024, citing significant health violations. Following multiple failed inspections, FOX 5/KUSI reported that the latest inspection granted an impressive score of 98 out of 100, allowing the restaurant to get an A, but some violations were still noted.

Initially established for pest control and deep cleaning, the closure also revealed deeper financial woes. According to SanDiegoVille, Las Cuatro Milpas reports nearly $50,000 in overdue property taxes and another $16,000 in state sales taxes. If these debts linger unresolved into mid-2025, the Company faces the possibility of a forced asset sale.

"The Estudillo family previously released a statement on January 2, 2025, refuting rumors of a permanent closure and affirming their commitment to a quick resolution and reopening," SanDiegoVille further stated. Despite the financial cliffhanger, patrons of Las Cuatro Milpas can once again enjoy the restaurant's authentic Mexican cuisine that has anchored its reputation for nearly a century in the historic Barrio Logan, located at 1857 Logan Avenue.
