Renovations at the Bloomington Ice Garden (BIG) have been slicing through the ice since November. The City of Bloomington has confirmed that the rink is undergoing a major transformation with a laundry list of improvements on the docket. These upgrades span the gamut from a resized Rink 3, ensuring it meets NHL standards, to essential changes in ticketing, security, and concession operations. According to a statement on the city's official website, locker rooms, restrooms, and offices, as well as mechanical and roofing systems are all in line for a refresh. Even the non-athletic amenities like ADA accessibility are getting a thoughtful overhaul.
For those who lace up their skates regularly at BIG, it's skating as usual until the venue hits the pause button on operations in mid-March. The city has laid out plans ensuring that the bustling hub of ice activity sees no interruptions to its day-to-day until that time. Essentially, for patrons, it's business as usual until spring. As reported by the official Bloomington website, the facility is gearing up to close through fall 2025 to accommodate the construction work in progress. Beyond the functional fixes and expansions, the project's scope also includes arguably less utilitarian but equally significant enhancements. These include the addition of a high school locker room and an indoor training area, along with an artistic mural set to grace the vestibule. It's a vibrant touch to an already community-centric venue, making the space about more than just sport; but expression and gathering, too. Details about the mural or its creator are currently scant, but one can expect that the artwork will play into the local flavor and pride of the Bloomington skating scene, giving patrons new and old something to gaze at as they zip up their jackets and tighten their laces.
The rink will keep its hum of activity buzzing until March 15, after which BIG's operations will be temporarily put on ice. The renovators will have from the ides of March until the leaves turn amber again to execute their playbook of improvements. Making it a point to check out the facilities before the temporary shutter might be a wise move, mainly to enjoy the physical space before it undergoes its metamorphosis. For die-hards and casual skaters alike, the intermission in BIG's programming signals an exciting future checkpoint for an even cooler comeback.
