In an incident that rattled the local community, Boulder Police confirmed the arrest of a man after he allegedly threatened two Latino men with a firearm based on their ethnicity. The concerning episode unfolded at a gas station on the 2900 block of 30th Street on the night of January 27, as reported by the City of Boulder
Reporting to the scene just after 9 p.m., Boulder officers encountered two individuals shaken by an encounter where they were accosted while pumping gas. Christopher Antonio Morris, born on April 26, 2001, was pointed out as the suspect who brandished a gun, leaving comments hanging in the air tainted by prejudice. With crisp efficiency, Patrol officers from Watch 3 initiated a manhunt, circling Morris as the probable culprit.
Tightening their investigative net, officers in tandem with plainclothes detectives and BPD’s Special Enforcement Unit located Morris at a supermarket on 30th Street. They managed Morris's arrest without further incident by coordinating a strategy that ensured public safety. At the time he was apprehended, Morris was carrying a pistol, equipped with a laser attachment similar to the one described in the previous night's altercation, as Boulder Police disclosed.
The aftermath of these tense moments found Morris facing serious legal repercussions. "He was booked into jail on four counts of bias motivated crimes (a Class 1 Misdemeanor) and four counts of Menacing (a Class 5 Felony)," the Boulder Police said, as per City of Boulder, adding that the bond set by the judge totaled $20,000. This wasn't Morris's first brush with the law, the same officers had encountered him on New Year's Day for misdemeanors relating to the discharge of a firearm.
Addressing the gravity of the situation, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn emphasized the stand of law enforcement against such injustices. "We will not tolerate this type of behavior in our community," he noted, asserting the right of community members to live without fear. "Our community members should not live in fear as they go about their daily lives. We are fortunate this situation wasn’t worse than what it was, and I’m proud of the good investigative work done by both Patrol and detectives to quickly identify and the find the person responsible for threatening these victims," the chief stated, as obtained by the City of Boulder, underscoring the swift response by his department. It is worth noting, that the charges against Morris are accusations, and the presumption of innocence remains until proven otherwise.
