Boulder's youth are getting an opportunity to dip their toes into the waters of civic engagement as the City opens applications for its internship program. According to the City of Boulder, high school juniors and seniors residing in Boulder can now apply for a range of internships as part of the city's Youth Opportunities Program (YOP). Applications are welcomed through to Feb. 5, leaving plenty of time for interested candidates to throw their hats in the ring.
The program, whose objectives include fostering community engagement and leadership among the younger generation, lines up a variety of roles that place interns within the machinery of city government. Ranging from Neighborhood Services to Public Safety Communication, the internships offer a practical lens into the management of city affairs. Each placement will also have interns toiling away for 20 hours weekly, from May through July of 2025, with a promise of compensation for the work done.
It's not just about the work experience, though. The Youth Opportunities Internship Program has an educational sliver to it as well, with career readiness sessions also on deck. These additional segments are designed to sculpt the professional skills of the interns, enhancing their capabilities beyond the internship and into whatever comes next on their career path.
Among the internships are several that attend to different aspects of Boulder's community life. Opportunities include working as a Community Mediation and Resolution Center Intern, assisting in bilingual education efforts within the Open Space and Mountain Parks, and putting on an Equity Ambassador hat to advocate for inclusivity and diversity.
