Almost a year to the day after Catherine Stirm was reported missing, the Bradenton Police Department has revealed that a local probate judge has now declared the 67-year-old Bradenton woman dead. As the investigation unfolded, the chilling details led detectives to believe her brother, Scott Stirm, was implicated in her presumed death, believed to involve dismemberment. The case, while still unresolved, has unearthed evidence that paints a somber narrative of her final days, with investigators piecing together her last known movements and the subsequent actions of her brother.
According to WFLA, Catherine hadn't been seen since visiting her brother at the Sawgrass Cove Apartment complex on January 22, 2024. A doorbell camera captured her entering Scott's apartment and she was never observed leaving. In the harrowing days that followed, the camera footage showed Scott struggling to remove what appeared to be heavy-duty bags from his residence. Catherine's vehicle was later discovered at his apartment complex, though her brother reportedly offered conflicting stories regarding her whereabouts — initially insisting she was hospitalized with COVID-19 before claiming she had traveled to Michigan.
The Bradenton Police Department's grave suspicions were further compounded when, during a welfare check requested by her co-workers who received a suspicious call from someone purporting to be Catherine, they found neither Catherine nor her car at her home in the Fountain Lakes Condominium complex, detailed WTSP. It wasn't until January 30 that her car was found at her brother's residence.
Multiple items, including a hand, saw, power saw, and cleaning products, were found during a search warrant executed at Scott Stirm's home on February 1, 2024, according to FOX 13 News. A search at the Manatee County Landfill further shed light on the grim situation, where detectives unearthed a knife, hatchet, and bloody clothing in a bag stuffed with Scott's mail. That tragic evening, as investigators were piecing together these findings, Scott was discovered dead by suicide in a hotel room, with items including Catherine's driver's license found in his possession. The attempted destruction of evidence has rendered DNA tests on the recovered items inconclusive.
Bradenton police, while faced with a case with more questions than answers, continue to seek information that might shine a light on Catherine Stirm's fate. Detective Jeff Beckley and the Manatee Homicide Investigative Unit, entrusted with the investigation amidst such suspicious circumstances, encourage anyone with relevant information to reach out.
