The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn has recently come under fire for what many are calling 'inhumane conditions' within the facility. According to a report by the New York Daily News, the federal jail, which houses over 1,100 inmates, is operating with just two doctors on staff, a startling revelation given an unfilled physician opening for nearly a decade.
These staffing shortages have resulted in numerous concerns, among them delayed or botched medical treatments, including an incident in which an inmate failed to receive his full course of antibiotics. Dr. Bruce Bialor, MDC's clinical director, couldn't tell a judge whether a specific medical-staff-to-inmate ratio was maintained, as revealed in a recent Brooklyn Federal Court hearing. "We can always use more staff. I think any medical provider would say the same thing," Bialor stated, as per New York Daily News.
Further compounding these issues, a separate report by the Jacob Fuchsberg Law Firm highlights a series of problems at the facility, including wrongful deaths, medical malpractice, sexual assault, and violence amongst inmates and staff. Claims of inadequate mental health care, preventable inmate deaths, and failure to manage drug or alcohol withdrawal symptoms have been lodged against the beleaguered detention center.
In addition, an interagency investigation led by the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and Office of Inspector General (OIG), focused on MDC Brooklyn, reportedly resulted in the removal of contraband and weapons but fell short of addressing broader systemic issues. "The dangers are reportedly exacerbated by lack of proper oversight, staffing shortages, and a backlog of maintenance requests," as noted by the Jacob Fuchsberg Law Firm.
