A tragic domestic incident claimed the life of a Brooklyn woman on Friday night, with her son being the prime suspect. The altercation occurred at the victim's apartment building on E. 92nd St. near Lenox Road in East Flatbush. According to NY Daily News, 29-year-old Weverton Lino was arraigned on murder and weapons charges and is being held without bail after the incident where he allegedly stabbed his 45-year-old mother, Roselene Oliveira, 13 times.
Before the escalation to homicide, there had been previous calls to the police regarding domestic disputes between Lino and Oliveira, with the police filing domestic incident reports twice before. Neighbors corroborated the violence of the attack, with one recounting, "I saw the holes, they went right through. There was a lot of blood," in a statement obtained by NY Daily News. Lino's behavior had reportedly been erratic, resulting in an incoherent shouting match before the stabbing and only ended once police deployed a taser to subdue him and secure the knife from his grip.
Simultaneously, a report from NY Post provides insight on the moments of bravery shown by local residents during the harrowing event. One individual, who chose to remain anonymous, described the chilling screams heard: "I just heard a loud scream, a woman screaming, ‘Help me!’ After that, I heard a faint moan." A good Samaritan saw the attack and, along with another neighbor who had the assailant pinned to the ground, worked to apprehend him. He said, "I went straight for the knife. It was a kitchen knife, a steak knife. The blade was seven or eight inches long… I grabbed the blade. I held on to it. He tried to yank it away. It sliced my fingers."
Emergency services swiftly transported Oliveira to Brookdale University Hospital; however, she did not survive her injuries. NYPD body-worn camera footage depicts neighbors pointing out Lino, who was "still gripping a knife," according to prosecutors as reported by NY Daily News. As the investigation continues, Wayne Bodden, Lino's attorney, announced plans to request a psychiatric evaluation for his client. Lino, who resides in the Bronx, now faces a grim legal battle while his family and the surrounding community grapple with the devastating aftermath of a domestic dispute turned deadly.
