The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an advisory for the Piedmont region of North Carolina and parts of Upper South Carolina. From midnight tonight until 10 AM EST Tuesday, wind chills could drop as low as 5°F. Residents are advised to bundle up and take precautions against the cold, according to the Cold Weather Advisory by the NWS.

The NWS warns of several days of freezing weather ahead, affecting cities like Charlotte, Rock Hill, and Monroe. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be especially cold. Residents should dress warmly with layers, heat packs, and mittens. The NWS advises that, "Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure," so limit time outdoors if possible.

The NWS warns of added strain on power grids due to high electricity demand. They recommend having backup plans, especially for those using electricity for medical devices or heating. Residents should prepare alternative heat or power sources and check on neighbors who might need help.

The big freeze is also presenting some major challenges for infrastructure and wildlife. The NWS warned us to be “situated outdoors in well-ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning” if using emergency generators.

With the forecast looking to stick below the 40s, even during the so-called warmest parts of the day, one might think the cold has outstayed its welcome. But take heart, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. By the end of the week, the NWS promises us highs nearing a practically tropical 45 to 52 degrees.
