California Governor Gavin Newsom has extended a financial lifeline to the communities ravaged by the recent Los Angeles firestorms, announcing an executive order that pushes the property tax deadline to April 2026 for the disaster-stricken areas, as detailed by an official communication from the Governor's Office. This means homeowners affected by the fires in designated ZIP codes now have an extra year of breathing room before they need to settle up with the state.
The Governor's order, outlined in a press release, specifically calls for a suspension of penalties and additional costs, along with any interest that would normally accumulate on late property tax payments, these measures aim to lessen the burden on property owners in hard-hit communities. "California is here for the survivors who have been impacted by the fire. Whether streamlining housing or helping to relieve a financial or administrative hardship, we are doing all we can to ensure these communities get the help they need," Governor Newsom said, determined to provide tangible support.
Eligible residents in affected ZIP codes, which include 90019, 90041, and several others, may also seek reassessment of their property values through the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office if they suffered damage or destruction during the fires; this could potentially lead to lowered property tax bills reflective of their property's diminished worth, this step must be taken within a year of the property’s damage or destruction, as per the Governor's Office. Additionally, property owners can submit a Penalty Cancellation Request Form to the Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector to apply for an even longer reprieve on penalties and interest.
